Late last night the Next Generation Portable (codename) was unveiled at PlayStation Meeting 2011. We promised you all the details as soon as we got them, in our late night posting and now we’re delivering. Here’s what we know about the NGP, (as currently reported by the PlayStation Blog) as it’s being called right now. The NGP will feature:
- Multi-touch 5-inch organic light emitting display (OLED) as the front display
- Multi-touch pad on the rear of the device
- Dual analog sticks
- Two cameras (front and rear)
- Software titles on small, dedicated flash memory-based cards
- Three motion sensors, gyroscope, accelerometer and electronic compass
- Wi-Fi and 3G network connectivity
- PlayStation Network access, including ““LiveAreaâ„¢â€, “Near†and “Activity†log features Trophy Support
- NGP will be able to play PSP titles, minis, PS one classics, video and comics from the PlayStation Store.

A new LittleBigPlanet and WipEout will be cool. I wonder what Little Deviants will be like?
It would be cool if they offered free 3G like the Kindle and Nook eReaders offer, but I doubt that will happen. I don’t think I want to pay monthly for another device to use 3G wireless on it.
The touch pad on the back sounds interesting and they had to put a gyroscope and accelerometer in it to compete with the Nintendo 3DS and iPhone.
But with all of this I still feel like it isn’t that much different than what we already have available.
I hardly ever play my PSP, so if they can’t make better games for this system I won’t be that excited about it.
I agree, I mean the games will probably look amazing, but without further support beyond these launch games they will continue to suffer the fate of the PSP. I think it will be cool, but we’ll see just how much it will cost and whether the 3DS with a decent sized head start will have too much momentum to overcome.
