Cocoto Magic Circus was developed by Neko Entertainment and plays similar to games like Point Blank. And while this game is a little on the short side, there is some fun to be had there for younger gamers.
Cocoto Magic Circus’s story is almost nonexistent. At the beginning of the arcade mode, you are treated to about a 30 second cut scene that sets up the game. You have your characters standing around; talking in some gibberish language. Some mysterious fairy flies up, yells something at them, and then is almost immediately captured by some creepy clown. Honestly that’s about it. Not much to go on there, but then again, that’s not the reason to be playing the game, the minigames are.
On the gameplay end, Cocoto Magic Circus really doesn’t have a lot going for it. The game box boasts “40 minigames” when in fact it should say “8 minigames, with 5 different little variations” because that’s basically all there is. After the first or second time playing the same minigame with a palette swap, it starts to become really repetitive. And even on the hardest difficulty, the game can be completed in about 30 minutes. Cocoto Magic Circus offers a multiplayer option, but sadly, what could have been the saving grace of the game is nothing more than the single player experience, with each player taking turns to try to out score the other. No two players shooting at the same screen trying to sabotage the other or keep the other from winning, just “Hey, you play this level then I will play the exact same thing right after you and try to do better.” With all that said, the controls for the game are spot on. The Wiimote does a good job at following your movements and at the highest difficulty; your arm will get quite a workout.
The graphics and the sound in the game are definitely the high points. The soundtrack is really well done and fits the tone of the game really well. It’s lighthearted and it’s probably one of the better soundtracks I have heard on the Wii. The graphics as well are really well done. They capture the tone of the game and even though they are simplistic the animation is really well done. A lot of Wii developers should look to this game for what can be accomplished on the Wii.
Final Verdict
Cocoto Magic Circus is a hard one to give a rating. The gameplay gets really repetitive as the game goes on, but the wonderful graphics and sound redeem it somewhat. Also, the game is aimed squarely at the younger crowd, and my daughters had a blast playing it. So my final score is based on my play through, but add at least 2 points if you have younger children, because I can guarantee that they will love it.
